Daktarin Oral Gel

Daktarin Oral Gel is an antifungal medicine containing miconazole 20 mg per gram (2%). It is primarily used to treat oral candidiasis (oral thrush), a fungal infection that can affect the tongue, gums, inner cheeks, roof of the mouth and throat.

Uses of Daktarin Oral Gel

Daktarin Oral Gel is mainly used for fungal infections caused by Candida in the mouth and throat. Oral thrush may cause white or creamy patches, redness, soreness, an unpleasant taste or discomfort while eating.

It may also be used for denture-associated oral candidiasis. However, Daktarin is not a general treatment for mouth ulcers, toothache or bacterial dental infections.

How Does Daktarin Oral Gel Work?

Miconazole belongs to the azole antifungal group. It interferes with the fungal cell membrane, preventing susceptible fungi from growing and helping eliminate the infection.

The gel is designed to remain in contact with affected areas of the mouth before being swallowed.

How to Use Daktarin Oral Gel

The gel is generally used after meals. It should be kept in the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing.

• Adults and children aged 2 years and above: 2.5 mL four times daily after meals.
• Infants aged 4–24 months: 1.25 mL four times daily, divided into smaller portions and carefully applied to affected areas.

Treatment is generally continued for at least one week after symptoms have disappeared.

For denture-associated thrush, dentures should be removed at night and cleaned appropriately. The product information also advises brushing dentures with the gel during treatment.

Important Warning for Infants

Daktarin Oral Gel can cause choking in infants and young children if incorrectly administered. It should never be placed at the back of an infant’s throat.
