Caflam 50mg Tablet is a pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medicine containing diclofenac potassium 50mg. It belongs to a group of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Caflam is marketed in Pakistan by Novartis Pharma (Pakistan) Ltd.
It is commonly used for the short-term relief of pain, swelling, stiffness, and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal problems, arthritis, dental pain, injuries, and painful menstrual periods.
What Is Caflam Tablet Used For?
Caflam reduces pain and inflammation and may be prescribed for conditions such as:
- Joint and muscle pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Back pain
- Sprains and other painful injuries
- Dental pain
- Pain and swelling following certain procedures
- Painful menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea)
- Other acute inflammatory and painful conditions
Diclofenac works mainly by reducing the production of prostaglandins, chemicals involved in pain and inflammation.
How to Take Caflam 50mg
Caflam should be used according to the instructions of a doctor or pharmacist. The appropriate dose and duration depend on the condition being treated, the patient’s age, medical history, other medicines, and individual risk factors.
Diclofenac should generally be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary, because the likelihood of serious adverse effects can increase with higher doses or prolonged use.
Do not increase the dose or use Caflam regularly for an extended period without medical advice.
Common Side Effects
Possible side effects of diclofenac include:
- Indigestion
- Stomach discomfort or pain
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Fluid retention
- Increased blood pressure
- Skin rash
Not everyone taking Caflam will experience these effects.
Important Warnings
Like other NSAIDs, diclofenac can occasionally cause serious complications. These include stomach or intestinal ulcers and bleeding, kidney problems, severe allergic reactions, and an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke.
Extra caution may be necessary for people with:
- A history of stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Kidney or liver disease
- Heart disease
- High blood pressure
- Asthma triggered by aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Bleeding disorders
- Previous reactions to diclofenac, aspirin, ibuprofen, or similar medicines
Seek medical attention for symptoms such as vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, facial swelling, chest pain, or a severe skin reaction.
Caflam During Pregnancy
Diclofenac should not be used during pregnancy without medical advice. NSAID use is particularly concerning later in pregnancy and should be avoided unless specifically directed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
Women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding should discuss diclofenac use with their doctor.
Can Caflam Be Taken With Other Painkillers?
Do not combine Caflam with other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin used for pain relief, or another diclofenac-containing medicine unless advised by a healthcare professional. Combining NSAIDs can increase the risk of stomach bleeding and other adverse effects.
Diclofenac can also interact with medicines such as anticoagulants, some blood-pressure medicines, diuretics, corticosteroids, lithium, methotrexate, and certain other drugs. Tell your doctor or pharmacist about medicines and supplements you already use.
Important Note for Dengue
Caflam contains diclofenac, an NSAID. It should generally be avoided in suspected or confirmed dengue because NSAIDs can increase bleeding risk. A healthcare professional should be consulted for appropriate fever and pain management in dengue.
