Clinxer Lotion is a topical antibiotic used mainly in the treatment of acne caused or aggravated by susceptible bacteria. It contains clindamycin, an antibiotic from the lincosamide group. In Pakistan, Clinxer is manufactured by UniMark Pharmaceuticals (Pvt.) Ltd. and is available as a 30 mL topical lotion.
Composition
Each mL of Clinxer Lotion contains:
Clindamycin (as clindamycin phosphate) — 10 mg/mL (1%)
It is a topical preparation intended for application to the skin.
Primary Uses
Clinxer Lotion is primarily used for acne vulgaris, particularly inflammatory acne where bacterial activity contributes to the development of pimples.
It may be prescribed for:
- Inflamed acne pimples
- Red acne bumps (papules)
- Pus-filled acne lesions (pustules)
- Mild to moderate inflammatory acne
- Acne affecting the face, chest or back
It is not designed simply to lighten acne marks or remove old acne scars.
How Clinxer Lotion Works
Clindamycin acts against acne-associated bacteria by interfering with bacterial protein production. This reduces bacterial activity within affected follicles and can help decrease the inflammation associated with acne.
However, topical antibiotics are generally not preferred as indefinite standalone acne treatments because prolonged use can encourage antibiotic resistance.
Depending on the patient’s acne, a dermatologist may use topical clindamycin alongside another acne treatment such as benzoyl peroxide to reduce resistance and improve acne control.
How to Apply Clinxer Lotion
Use Clinxer according to your doctor’s directions.
Generally, the skin should first be gently washed and dried. Apply a thin layer over the acne-affected area, rather than repeatedly applying large amounts to individual spots.
Avoid contact with the:
- Eyes
- Inside of the nose
- Mouth and lips
- Broken or severely irritated skin
Wash your hands after application.
Do not apply more frequently than prescribed. Using additional lotion will not necessarily clear acne faster and may increase irritation.
How Long Does Clinxer Take to Work?
Acne treatment is gradual. Some improvement may become noticeable after several weeks, while a longer treatment period may be needed for a meaningful reduction in inflammatory acne.
If acne is worsening or showing little improvement despite appropriate use, the treatment plan should be reviewed rather than continuing topical antibiotics indefinitely.
Possible Side Effects
Clinxer Lotion can cause local skin reactions such as:
- Dryness
- Redness
- Mild burning or stinging
- Itching
- Peeling
- Skin irritation
- Contact dermatitis
Although much less clindamycin reaches the body from topical treatment than from oral or injectable treatment, some systemic absorption can occur.
A particularly important warning is severe or persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or bloody diarrhea. Clindamycin has been associated with antibiotic-related colitis. Stop treatment and seek medical advice if significant diarrhea develops.
Clinxer and Antibiotic Resistance
This is particularly important with topical clindamycin.
Repeated or prolonged use of clindamycin alone can encourage resistant bacteria. Current acne-management approaches therefore commonly favor combining topical antibiotics with benzoyl peroxide rather than maintaining antibiotic monotherapy for long periods.
Patients should follow the prescribed treatment duration rather than keeping Clinxer as a permanent everyday acne lotion.
Clinxer Lotion vs Clinxer-V
Despite their similar names, these products are intended for different uses.
Clinxer Lotion contains clindamycin 1% (10 mg/mL) and is a topical skin preparation commonly used for acne.
Clinxer-V contains clindamycin 2% as a vaginal cream and is used for conditions such as bacterial vaginosis. It should not be confused with the acne lotion.
