Betnovate-N Cream is a topical medicine used for inflammatory skin conditions where a bacterial skin infection is present, suspected or likely to develop. It contains two active ingredients: Betamethasone Valerate, a corticosteroid that helps reduce redness, swelling and itching, and Neomycin Sulphate, an antibacterial medicine that acts against susceptible bacteria.
Betnovate-N Cream is commonly associated with conditions such as infected eczema, dermatitis and other inflammatory skin problems. It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Pakistan and is available as a cream for external use. GSK Pakistan lists Betnovate-N Cream with Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% w/w and Neomycin Sulphate 0.5% w/w.
Primary Use of Betnovate-N
Betnovate-N Cream is primarily used for inflammatory skin conditions with a bacterial infection or a risk of secondary bacterial infection.
Main Uses
Betnovate N Cream may be used for inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis when bacterial infection is present or suspected. It may also be prescribed for certain forms of psoriasis and other steroid-responsive skin conditions where bacterial infection is an additional concern.
The medicine is particularly useful when symptoms such as redness, itching and inflammation occur together with signs of a bacterial skin infection.
Betnovate N is not intended for every type of rash, fungal infection or viral skin infection. A healthcare professional should determine whether a corticosteroid-antibiotic combination is appropriate.
Composition
Each gram of Betnovate N Cream contains:
Betamethasone Valerate 0.1% w/w
Neomycin Sulphate 0.5% w/w
Betamethasone Valerate is the corticosteroid component, while Neomycin Sulphate provides antibacterial activity. The formulation is supplied as a topical cream for application to the skin.
How It Works
Betamethasone Valerate reduces inflammation in the skin by suppressing inflammatory reactions. This helps decrease redness, swelling and itching.
Neomycin Sulphate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that acts against susceptible bacteria. It helps control bacterial infection when bacteria are contributing to the skin problem.
Together, these ingredients can provide relief when inflammation and bacterial infection occur at the same time.
How to Apply
Apply a thin layer of Betnovate N Cream to the affected area exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.
Clean and gently dry the affected skin before application when appropriate. Wash your hands after applying the cream unless your hands are the area being treated.
Avoid applying it to the eyes, mouth or other sensitive areas unless specifically instructed. Do not cover the treated area with a tight or airtight dressing unless advised by a healthcare professional.
The amount and duration of treatment depend on the skin condition and the area being treated.
Side Effects
Possible side effects may include:
- Mild burning or stinging
- Skin irritation
- Dryness
- Itching
- Redness
- Skin sensitivity
Prolonged or inappropriate use of topical corticosteroids can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, visible small blood vessels and changes in skin colour.
Neomycin can also cause local allergic skin reactions in some people, particularly with prolonged or repeated use.
Stop using the cream and seek medical advice if the skin condition becomes significantly worse or a severe allergic reaction develops.
Warnings and Precautions
Betnovate N contains a potent topical corticosteroid, so it should not be used casually for every rash or itching problem.
Avoid prolonged use without medical supervision. Extra caution is required when applying corticosteroid-containing creams to the face, skin folds or other areas where the skin is thin because side effects can develop more easily.
Do not use the cream over large areas of skin for extended periods unless prescribed by a healthcare professional.
If the condition does not improve or becomes worse during treatment, medical advice should be obtained.
Contraindications
Betnovate N Cream should generally not be used for untreated fungal or viral skin infections, including conditions such as ringworm, herpes or chickenpox, unless specifically directed by a healthcare professional.
It should also be avoided in people with a known allergy to Betamethasone, Neomycin or any other ingredient in the formulation.
Important Interactions
Because Betnovate N is applied to the skin, significant medicine interactions are less common than with many oral medicines. However, absorption can increase when the cream is applied over large areas, damaged skin or under occlusive dressings.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about other topical medicines being used on the same area, as combining several skin treatments may increase irritation or corticosteroid exposure.
