Sangobion Capsule is an iron, folic acid, vitamin and mineral supplement used primarily for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia. In Pakistan, Sangobion capsules are marketed by Martin Dow and are supplied as soft-gelatin capsules.
Unlike a simple iron tablet, Sangobion combines iron with folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C, copper and manganese, nutrients that have roles in red blood cell formation and iron metabolism.
Sangobion Capsule Composition
Each capsule contains:
- Ferrous Gluconate Dihydrate: 250 mg
- Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): 50 mg
- Folic Acid: 1 mg
- Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin): 7.5 mcg
- Manganese Sulfate Monohydrate: 0.2 mg
- Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate: 0.2 mg
The ferrous gluconate provides approximately 30 mg of elemental iron.
What is Sangobion Capsule Used For?
Sangobion is primarily used to provide iron and other nutrients needed for healthy red blood cell production.
It may be recommended for:
- Iron-deficiency anemia
- Low iron stores
- Iron and folate deficiency
- Increased iron requirements during pregnancy when medically appropriate
- Increased nutritional requirements during recovery
- Prevention of iron deficiency in selected individuals
Symptoms such as tiredness, weakness, dizziness or pale skin can occur with iron-deficiency anemia, but these symptoms have many other causes. Ideally, iron deficiency should be confirmed rather than assuming that fatigue means a person needs iron.
How Does Sangobion Work?
Iron is required to produce hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen.
Folic acid and vitamin B12 contribute to normal red blood cell formation, while vitamin C can improve absorption of non-heme iron. Copper and manganese are included as trace minerals.
Together, these ingredients make Sangobion a haematinic supplement designed to support blood formation when iron or related nutritional deficiencies are present.
How to Take Sangobion
Take Sangobion according to the instructions provided by your doctor, pharmacist or the product leaflet.
Iron absorption can be affected by food and other medicines. However, iron can also cause gastrointestinal discomfort, so the most appropriate timing may depend on how well you tolerate it.
Avoid changing the prescribed amount simply because your hemoglobin remains low. The cause of anemia matters, and not every type of anemia improves with additional iron.
Common Side Effects
Iron-containing supplements can cause gastrointestinal effects such as:
- Nausea
- Stomach discomfort
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Indigestion
- Metallic or unpleasant taste
Can Sangobion make stools black?
Yes. Dark green, dark brown or black stools can occur while taking oral iron supplements and are usually harmless.
However, black stools can also occur with gastrointestinal bleeding. Seek medical advice if the stool is tarry/sticky or accompanied by abdominal pain, vomiting blood, dizziness, weakness or other concerning symptoms.
Food and Drinks That Can Affect Iron Absorption
Tea and coffee contain compounds that can reduce iron absorption when consumed close to an iron supplement. Calcium-containing products may also interfere with absorption.
It can therefore be useful to separate an iron supplement from:
- Tea
- Coffee
- Milk and some calcium-rich products
- Calcium supplements
- Antacids
The appropriate interval can depend on the product and other medicines being taken.
Drug Interactions
Iron can reduce the absorption of several medicines when taken together. Important examples include:
- Levothyroxine
- Tetracycline antibiotics
- Quinolone antibiotics
- Certain medicines used for Parkinson’s disease
- Calcium-containing products
- Some antacids
These medicines may need to be taken several hours apart from iron. Ask a doctor or pharmacist about the appropriate interval for your particular medicines.
Who Should Be Careful With Sangobion?
Sangobion should not automatically be used for every low hemoglobin result.
Tell your doctor if you have:
- Hemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition
- Repeated blood transfusions
- Anemia that has not been confirmed as iron deficiency
- Significant liver disease
- Gastrointestinal disease
- Known vitamin B12 deficiency
- An unexplained persistent low hemoglobin level
A CBC and ferritin, along with other investigations when necessary, can help determine whether iron deficiency is actually present.
Sangobion During Pregnancy
Iron and folic acid requirements increase during pregnancy, and supplementation is commonly recommended when appropriate.
However, pregnant women should follow their obstetrician’s recommended iron and folic-acid regimen rather than combining several supplements independently. This helps avoid unnecessary duplication of iron, folic acid or other vitamins.
How Long Does Sangobion Take to Work?
Response depends on the severity and cause of the deficiency.
When iron deficiency is correctly diagnosed and adequately treated, blood production begins responding before iron stores are fully replenished. Treatment often needs to continue beyond improvement in hemoglobin to rebuild depleted iron stores.
Doctors may repeat CBC, hemoglobin and ferritin to assess response.
If blood counts fail to improve as expected, possible explanations include poor absorption, continued blood loss, inconsistent treatment or a different cause of anemia.
Sangobion vs a Regular Multivitamin
Sangobion should not be considered simply another general multivitamin.
Its formulation is specifically centered around iron and blood-forming nutrients, particularly ferrous gluconate, folic acid and vitamin B12. This makes it more relevant to iron deficiency and anemia than an ordinary daily multivitamin.
Important Safety Information
Iron supplements should be kept out of reach of children. Accidental iron overdose can be particularly dangerous in young children.
Also remember that low hemoglobin does not automatically mean iron deficiency. Conditions such as vitamin deficiencies, chronic diseases, blood loss and inherited blood disorders can also cause anemia. Persistent or unexplained anemia should therefore be properly evaluated.
