More Details About the Medicine

Pentoxol-M Tablet is a prescription medicine containing flupenthixol 0.5 mg and melitracen 10 mg. It is manufactured in Pakistan by Scotmann Pharmaceuticals. The combination has antidepressant and anxiolytic properties and is used for conditions involving anxiety, depression and associated symptoms.

Uses of Pentoxol-M Tablet

Pentoxol-M is prescribed for the management of anxiety and depressive disorders, particularly when symptoms such as low mood, anxiety, apathy or reduced motivation occur together.

According to the manufacturer’s prescribing information, it may be used for anxiety, depression, psychogenic depression, depressive neurosis, masked depression and certain psychosomatic conditions associated with anxiety and apathy.

It should only be used under medical supervision and is not intended for casual treatment of everyday stress or temporary low mood.

How Does Pentoxol-M Work?

Pentoxol-M combines two medicines with different actions.

Flupenthixol acts primarily on dopamine receptors in the brain and has neuroleptic properties. At the low dose used in this combination, it contributes anxiolytic and antidepressant effects.

Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant that affects neurotransmitters including serotonin and norepinephrine. Together, the two medicines help improve symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.

Dosage and How to Take It

The dose should be determined by a doctor. The manufacturer’s prescribing information states that the usual adult dosage is two tablets daily, taken in the morning and at noon. In more severe cases, the morning dose may be increased by the prescriber. For elderly patients, the listed dosage is generally one tablet in the morning.

Patients should not change the dose or stop treatment without consulting their doctor.

Side Effects

Reported side effects of Pentoxol-M include temporary restlessness and insomnia. Other effects associated with its active ingredients may occur, particularly depending on dose and individual response.

Contact your doctor if troublesome or unusual symptoms develop during treatment.

Precautions and Contraindications

Pentoxol-M should not be used in people who are allergic to its ingredients. The manufacturer’s information also lists contraindications including the immediate recovery period following a heart attack, untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, certain cardiac conduction problems, acute intoxication with alcohol, barbiturates or opioids, and recent use of MAO inhibitor antidepressants.

The manufacturer also lists pregnancy and breastfeeding as contraindications. Patients should tell their doctor about all medicines they take before starting Pentoxol-M.

Alcohol and other medicines that depress the central nervous system may interact with this medicine.

Pentoxol-M vs Pentoxol

Pentoxol-M and Pentoxol should not be confused.

Pentoxol-M contains flupenthixol 0.5 mg + melitracen 10 mg, while Pentoxol contains flupenthixol alone and is available in different strengths. The two products have different formulations and should not be substituted without medical advice.
