Sustac 6.4 mg Tablet is a sustained-release medicine containing glyceryl trinitrate (nitroglycerin) 6.4 mg. It is manufactured by The Searle Company Limited in Pakistan and is primarily prescribed for the prevention of angina pectoris, a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. Searle supplies Sustac 6.4 mg in packs of 30 sustained-release tablets.
Uses of Sustac 6.4 mg
Sustac 6.4 mg is used as preventive treatment for angina pectoris. The manufacturer also specifies its use for angina associated with or complicated by a previous myocardial infarction (heart attack).
Because Sustac is formulated to release glyceryl trinitrate gradually, it provides a longer-lasting effect. It is therefore intended mainly to help prevent angina attacks rather than provide immediate relief from sudden chest pain.
How Does Sustac 6.4 mg Work?
Glyceryl trinitrate is a vasodilator, meaning it relaxes and widens blood vessels. This reduces venous return to the heart and decreases the amount of work the heart must perform. It can also improve coronary blood flow. These actions reduce the heart’s oxygen demand and help prevent angina symptoms.
The sustained-release formulation has evidence of activity extending for six hours or longer.
How to Take Sustac 6.4 mg
Sustac 6.4 mg is a prescription medicine and should be taken according to the dosage and schedule recommended by the treating doctor.
Because it is a sustained-release preparation, patients should follow the instructions for swallowing and administration supplied with their medicine. Do not increase the dose or alter the treatment schedule without medical advice.
Side Effects
Possible side effects associated with glyceryl trinitrate include:
- Headache
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Facial flushing
- Nausea
- Low blood pressure
- Weakness
- Increased or noticeable heartbeat
- Fainting
Headaches can be particularly noticeable when nitrate treatment is started because of the medicine’s blood-vessel-widening effect.
Important Precautions
Sustac can cause a significant fall in blood pressure. Patients should tell their doctor about other medicines they are taking, particularly treatments for high blood pressure or heart disease.
Glyceryl trinitrate must not be combined with erectile dysfunction medicines such as sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil unless specifically cleared by a physician, as the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Alcohol may also worsen dizziness and low blood pressure.
Patients should seek medical advice before using Sustac if they have very low blood pressure, certain heart conditions, severe anaemia or other significant medical problems.
Sustac 6.4 mg and Sudden Chest Pain
Sustac 6.4 mg should not be relied upon for immediate treatment of an acute angina attack. Patients who have been prescribed a fast-acting nitrate for sudden angina should follow their doctor’s emergency treatment plan.
New, severe or persistent chest pain—especially with sweating, breathlessness, nausea or pain spreading to the arm, back or jaw—requires urgent medical assessment.
