More Details About the Medicine

Fosegin-H Cream is a topical combination medicine used for certain inflamed skin conditions complicated by bacterial infection. In Pakistan, Fosegin-H is manufactured by Welmed Pharmaceutical Industries (Pvt.) Ltd. and is listed as a 15 g cream.

Composition

Fosegin-H Cream contains:

  • Fusidic Acid 2% w/w – a topical antibiotic
  • Hydrocortisone 1% w/w – a mild corticosteroid

This combination provides both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

Primary Uses

Fosegin-H may be prescribed for bacterial skin infections where inflammation, redness or itching is also present, particularly when susceptible bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus are involved.

Common clinical situations can include:

  • Infected eczema or dermatitis
  • Inflamed skin with secondary bacterial infection
  • Redness and itching associated with infected dermatitis
  • Localised infected skin lesions when a steroid-antibiotic combination is appropriate

It should not be used for every rash or skin infection, because hydrocortisone can worsen or mask some infections.

How Fosegin-H Works

The two ingredients have different roles.

Fusidic acid inhibits bacterial protein synthesis and is particularly active against certain Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. It helps control susceptible bacterial infection in the treated area.

Hydrocortisone reduces inflammation, redness, swelling and itching. It is considered a relatively mild topical corticosteroid.

The combination is therefore intended for situations where both bacterial infection and inflammation are present.

How to Use Fosegin-H Cream

Apply a thin layer to the affected skin according to your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions. Wash your hands before and after application unless the hands themselves are being treated.

Combination fusidic acid/corticosteroid preparations are generally intended for short courses rather than prolonged continuous use. Extended or repeated antibiotic use can contribute to bacterial resistance, while prolonged corticosteroid exposure can damage the skin.

Avoid applying it to the eyes, inside the mouth or other mucous membranes unless specifically instructed.

Possible Side Effects

Most reactions occur at the application site and may include:

  • Burning or stinging
  • Skin irritation
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Dryness
  • Contact dermatitis

With excessive or prolonged corticosteroid use, particularly over large areas or under airtight dressings, effects such as skin thinning, visible small blood vessels, stretch marks or changes in skin pigmentation may occur.

Stop using the medicine and seek medical advice if the condition becomes significantly worse or a serious allergic reaction develops.

Important Precautions

Fosegin-H should not be routinely applied to acne, fungal infections such as ringworm, or viral skin infections unless a healthcare professional has specifically diagnosed the condition and prescribed this treatment.

Avoid prolonged use on the face because facial skin is particularly susceptible to corticosteroid-related adverse effects.

Extra caution is appropriate when treating children, large areas of skin, broken skin or areas covered by dressings.

Is Fosegin-H Cream Used for Acne?

Fosegin-H should not be considered a routine acne treatment. Although fusidic acid is an antibiotic, the hydrocortisone component can complicate acne and prolonged topical antibiotic use can promote antimicrobial resistance.

Someone with recurrent pimples or acne should use an acne-specific treatment rather than repeatedly applying Fosegin-H without medical advice.

Fosegin-H vs Fosegin-B

These products should not be confused.

Fosegin-H contains fusidic acid 2% + hydrocortisone 1%, whereas Fosegin-B is a different corticosteroid-antibiotic combination. Pakistani drug listings separately identify Fosegin-H as 2% + 1% and Fosegin-B as 2% + 0.1%.

They should therefore not be substituted for each other simply because the brand names are similar.
